Wind Star

  • Client: Windstar Cruises
  • Designer: McVitty Interior Consultants, Trimline Interiors

During the 3-ship refurbishment programme of the magnificent Windstar fleet, Chelsom worked closely with designers, McVitty Interior Consultants and contractors, Trimline Interiors to transform the interiors of these luxurious sail ships.

As well as supplying lighting to all the staterooms, Chelsom were commissioned to manufacture and supply a central reception installation to illuminate the heart of the main deck’s interior. McVitty’s brief was to create a “Wow Factor” feature and to deliver lighting effects, creating different moods according to the time of the day or night. Designed to resemble an aquarium, acrylic fish ‘swim’ in spirals around floating glass bubbles while Murano glass seaweed fronds sprout up from the ground. The bubbles and fish are suspended on taut strainer wires, giving the appearance of a swirling whirlpool whilst protecting them from vibrations caused by the ship’s engines or other movement whilst at sea. Lit from above and below, colour changing LED lights controlled remotely from the reception desk, refract through the glass in different tones of blue, green and red creating whatever ambient effect is desired. Mounted on a circular wooden plinth topped with polished chrome metalwork and surrounded by a protective handrail, guests may walk around the entire, stunning installation.

Murano glass table lamps from Chelsom grace the reception desk and complement beautifully the “Aquarium” pendant, completing the undoubted overall “Wow Factor” of the area.
